SAFFRON WALDEN
FEAST YOUR EYES
S affron Walden’s food scene award-winning vineyards and a handful of great restaurants and pubs. For a Sunday roast after a morning of exploring, we heartily recommend The Eight Bells, which is part of the Chestnut Group that also counts Grantchester’s Rupert Brooke among its members. A pretty, 16th-century timber-framed pub with vibrant interiors and fabulous food, it provides a perfect country pub experience. Another must- visit is Dead Time, a craft beer specialist on Rose and Crown Walk. Focusing on small, independent makers, it offers regular tasting events where you can sample beers, gins, ciders and wines, as well as browsing the huge selection on the shelves. Mini Miss Bread, which opened in has been going from strength to strength lately, with artisanal bakeries, boutique bottle shops, 2019, is another local favourite. Run by passionate baker Megan Charnock, it
specialises in sourdough, toasties, pastries and all sorts of homemade bakes. You can find it on Church Street. Bicicletta, on Market Walk, is another top spot to seek out. A cycling hub and cafe rolled into one, it serves coffee, lunch and brunch made with produce from local suppliers. Or check out long-standing favourite Cafe CouCou, nestled in the heart of the town centre on George Street. It offers oversized scones with cream and jam, homemade soup and baked potatoes. In the mood for some chocolate? Cambridge residents might already be familiar with chocolatier Hill St, thanks to its All Saints Passage branch, but the original shop was, and remains, on Saffron Walden’s Hill Street. Pop by and pick up a box of luxury chocolates made with the finest natural, local ingredients. Choices range from classic pralines to unique creations such as mojito and yuzu dark chocolate ganache.
