e Ferrailleur came up with an ambitious idea to celebrate its 10th anniversary. In 2017, the music venue, located in the

Le Ferrailleur has already built the technical set-up to enable it to stream music events, primarily with the support of Blackmagic Design. It uses a multi-camera system comprising three Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera 4Ks, one Panasonic Lumix GH4 and one Panasonic Lumix GH5, with a Canon 24-105mm lens. Blackmagic’s ATEM Television Studio HD is used to mix the camera signals, with the ability to combine sources from 25fps to 50fps, all in full HD. All of the streams are captured on a laptop with the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder, which also stores content that can be repurposed for highlights packages or mini clips for social network posting. Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is used for managing the video recording and live streaming, and the quality of sound is assured through the use of two sound boards. An important aspect of the technical set-up was to ensure that people watching a band from inside the club were not adversely affected by the equipment. As
city of Nantes, situated on the banks of the Loire River, decided to put on live shows over ten consecutive days; but La Ferrailleur wanted to reach a much wider audience than usual. The club has a capacity of only around 300 people, so the solution was to rent a big screen to enable the performances to be viewed outside the venue. The success of the project convinced François Montupet, head of communications at Le Ferrailleur, and director Mathieu Amussat-L’Hôtelier to start streaming concerts via the club’s Facebook page using the Facebook Live platform. A year later, La Ferrailleur’s Concerts Canapé (Couch Concerts) concept was finally unveiled to the public. The club now has seven ‘concerts canapé’ under its belt. It aims to do one broadcast every two months, and then only in the event that a show is sold out. But, as Montupet explains, a number of different factors have to come together to
