media unit is something that happens after the production, where they reuse existing content to publish highlights of something that has already happened. But we believe this will change. They will become a bit more important and will become involved in the production in incentivising and curating user-generated or external contributed content. And from a rights perspective they will have to check content before passing it onto the production team. FEED: Can you talk a bit more about how cloud-based services are helping news production? ANDREAS JACOBI: It would be great if broadcasters could earn more money with news. It’s a problem, obviously. It’s been our biggest goal to crack that market, and finally with our partnership with Al Jazeera we’re in a good position for that. With news, it’s not just about another way to make more with more. It’s a societal topic, it’s a topic for all our democracies, that news publishers have to be fast. Over the past five years, they

have really left the game to Twitter, simply because of speed. Journalists now have the weapons to be relevant and to tell a story that has both the journalistic research background and can provide some close pictures, personal angles that give you more information. And, as consumers, we’re looking for both. We want the truth with research, but we also want to see it. If there’s a picture of a refugee dying on the beach, everyone is sharing it because of its drama. You don’t want to look at it, but you will. The challenge for a journalist is to combine both. And sometimes it may be important to be able to access multiple contributors in one location to have a variety of sources. I believe and, we hope, that everybody

is interested in good journalism, but we all know that good video is key to reaching the masses. We hope they will become more relevant in the future than they are right now. And, by the way, Jamal Khashoggi was really the first one to hear our pitch, sitting in Cologne in our office three and a half years ago. FEED: Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist recently murdered in the Saudi consulate in Turkey? ANDREAS JACOBI: Yes. We pitched him this PowerPoint about live video cloud. Jamal was the editor-in-chief at Al-Arab News at that time. He was super interested in our concept and travelled to
