An app for that Mavis’ latest version of its flagship app, Mavis Camera, boasts a slew of new features and better usability, elevating content creation for iPhone-ographers and iPad users

IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND Mavis Camera takes small- screen filming to new heights

T oday, filmmaking is more accessible than ever. As the quality of smartphones improves, more people are recording, monitoring and publishing videos directly from their small-screen devices, truly putting control in the hands (and pockets) of creators. Where the iPhone’s camera app lacks compared to a digital video or cinema camera, Mavis makes up the difference. Originally released for the iPhone 5s, Mavis Camera – the first of its kind – provided pro monitoring tools for pro filmmakers. Now on v7, the application controls and monitors footage captured via the phone’s high-res camera and connects directly to Adobe Frame.io, with progressive upload, allowing users to publish content in mere minutes. Available on the iPad too, for the first time, the app capitalises on the larger screen. “Mavis Camera has been built from the ground up to equip users with the tools they’ll need for the next era of content creation,” begins Patrick Holroyd, CEO of Mavis. For those who like to adjust every last camera setting, the inbuilt iPhone

and iPad apps – while powerful – can sometimes fall short. This is where Mavis Camera shines, providing control over recording formats, frame rates, colour balance and focus, as well as monitoring tools like focus peaking, false colour, zebras, waveform and vectorscope. Plus, the app handles audio mixing in up to eight channels, all connected to the device via USB, offering accurate metering to ensure smooth, even sound. The v7 also introduces an improved interface that mirrors advancements in the iPhone’s own technology. Mavis Camera performs equally well in portrait and landscape modes, and users can customise thumb rails – ‘curved tracks that follow the natural motion of the user’s thumb’, according to Mavis – for left- or right-handed operation. “The app feels simple and familiar,” Holroyd promises. Recently demoed at NAB Show in Las Vegas, Mavis Camera has proven a game changer for content creators, from DOPs to hobbyists. “We’ve had great feedback after showcasing it,” Holroyd says. “When we show off the advanced

audio system, with its multitrack audio, gain and pan control and the ability to record individual tracks, as well as a stereo mix, they’re blown away with what you can now do on an iPhone.” While the app is free, the Pro Pack – which includes Camera to Cloud functionality, advanced audio mixing and timecode support – costs a one-time fee of $14.99. "Whether it’s for a streamer building a channel,” Holroyd continues, “an industry veteran looking for new ways of working or a creator with a passion for filmmaking, Mavis Camera has something to offer.”
