One eye on the future The GH5S offers a cost-effective entry point to high-end filmmaking for the professional but, as a tie-up between Panasonic and VICE proves, it’s also the perfect choice for young filmmakers learning their craft

W hen the Panasonic GH5 first made its appearance, there was as much interest from the filmmaking fraternity as there was from still photographers, since this was the perfect hybrid model, capable of excelling in both disciplines. There was a further card up the sleeve, however, that few saw coming, and this was the follow-up launch of the GH5S, a model that was unashamedly aimed completely at the filmmaker. With an outstanding feature set and a price point that could scarcely be believed, this quickly has become the go-to model for a generation of motion-orientated pros. A run-through of what is on board for little more than £2000/$2600 sums it up. First, the model provides the highest-ever sensitivity and image quality in Lumix history, thanks to a newly developed high sensitivity sensor with Dual Native ISO technology. This delivers the ability to keep noise levels low, while achieving high sensitivity – coupled with the latest Venus Engine. This is borrowed from Panasonic’s line-up of professional video models, so to find it trickling down to such an affordable model is impressive.

Also on board is the facility to achieve unlimited recording in C4K/4K at 60p/50p, 4:2:2 10-bit recording to ensure all of the subtleties of graduated skies and sunsets without the issue of banding that besets 8-bit recordings,. There is also the facility to record to an SD card, while simultaneously feeding the live signal through a full size HDMI port to an external monitor or recorder. One further advantage of the GH5S’s sensor is that it can handle multiple aspect ratios, namely 4:3, 17:9, 16:9 and 3:2 – thanks to broad margins of effective pixels, the focal length being employed doesn’t change. Meanwhile, rolling shutter distortion, compared to the Lumix GH5, is suppressed by approximately 1.3x with high readout speeds when recording video or using an electronic shutter. It’s an amazing list of features and it’s little surprise that the camera has rapidly achieved a huge and dedicated fan base. Small wonder, also, that it’s among the leading contenders in the Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards. Voting is now open, so if you want to make your voice heard and register your vote for this or any other of a whole
