RAPTOR LENSES | USER REVI EW

IBE OPTICS RAPTOR MACROS PRICE FROM £11,000/$14,000 The Raptor macro lenses were the perfect glass to match up with the Sony Venice full-frame camera – and some beautiful looking food

WORDS GARY ADCOCK

hile I am known for my work on the Camera Comparison Chart with

Tom Fletcher, people often forget I grew up as a creative. On a recent project I was tasked with showcasing Dialogue, an intimate, 18-seat restaurant from award-winning chef Dave Beran, hidden away in the second-storey food court of The Promenade, an open-air shopping centre in Santa Monica, California. I knew I would need to highlight the delicate nature of the chef’s cuisine and that we would have limited space to shoot in, as the entire restaurant, public and private, is approximately 110m². CALIFORNIAN CUISINE Chef Beran’s food is crafted from his mid-American attitude, imbibed with bounty found in California, meticulously presented to his diners as part of a ‘dialogue’ between chef and audience, so capturing detail of the preparations and display would require the attention to detail only macro photography would provide. Due to the space limitations, we needed to control imagery with our lensing, as our ability to move the camera around was limited.

ABOVE The Raptor range now encompasses four lenses and an extender.

“ DUE TO SPACE L IMI TAT I ONS WE NEEDED TO CONTROL IMAGERY WI TH LENS I NG ”

With DOP Randy Wedick shooting on Sony’s Venice Camera, we started production mere days after that camera was released. We had worked on a previous project that had utilised the first Raptor Macro lens and now there are additional lenses and an extender available as part of the IB/E lineup, offering a full range of four cine-style macro lenses and accessories. This ended up being a benefit, because at the time we worked with the Venice, the full-frame 6048x4032 acquisition was limited to 24fps, while the 3840x2160/UHD was able to record up to 60fps, so we used the 150mm when shooting in full-frame, and switched to the 100mm to give approximately the same perspective when we needed to modify the frame rates.
