THE MOVE FROM HD TO UHD COULD HAVE BEEN PRETTY SCARY
ANY SWITCH, ANY TIME “Because we’re basically running one enormous network, we can stick these anywhere,” says NEP’s Segar, “in any switch, at any time. One SFP in a network switch, or a VirtU, can provide great flexibility. You can take a 25G SFP out, put a 1G SFP in, and there’s your network port for control of your camera. “It’s infinitely scalable, too. Either add more of the SFPs into either switch, the FusioN or the VirtU, which we now have quite a lot of. You don’t get that level of granularity with any other product. Just keep adding them and adding them.” NEP has pushed the use of Riedel’s SFPs even further by using them for SDI encapsulation and de- encapsulation, for the company’s raft of SDI-based camera gear – and also to create the multiviewers. “It’s super fast to throw down and plug a bunch of cameras in. Because it’s IP, it comes up on the network straight away, and off you go.” “Our relationship with vendors is really important here. This has evolved into a proper partnership. The team at Riedel work with our team at NEP regularly – and it’s not just the Australian office, it’s a worldwide initiative. You’ve got two really innovative businesses joined together,” concludes Segar.
gateway functionalities – all in an extremely small form factor. Riedel’s SFP (small form-factor pluggable) devices have allowed a huge degree of spontaneous flexibility and adaptability in the Andrews Hubs. The MediorNet MuoN SFP is a gateway and processing device that can be used in Riedel’s VirtU frames or IP COTS switches. The software- defined hardware supports a range of different input and output configurations – including BNC, fibre, or HDMI (1.4 and 2.0). MuoN SFPs can also be configured with a range of apps. A change of the software licence can transform the tiny device into an up/down/cross converter, JPEG-2000/JPEG-XS encoder or decoder, an audio router, or even a 16x1 multiviewer.
Riedel’s stand-alone IP converter, the MediorNet FusioN, enables flexible connectivity between SDI/ HDMI and fibre optical, to ST 2110 formats – and also works with compressed formats. The FusioN frame can be turned into a 16-image ST 2110 multiviewer. The solution comes in two miniature frames, each with a flexible set of inputs and outputs, reprogrammable with different software functions. The MediorNet VirtU IP hosts an extremely dense array of Riedel’s MuoN SFP processors in 1RU. The frame can be used as a bulk gateway, dense processing unit, or for a combination of gateway and processing. The platform’s modularity lets users gradually build their key advanced gateway and processing power, as the need grows.
