it straightforward for someone with broadcast knowledge to use AMPP, we’ve done a lot of work to make system configuration fast. You do the set- up once, then that configuration can be stored as a snapshot. Once the show is done, you just turn the whole thing off. If I want to run the same show at a later date, I can start it up again and everything just comes up as it was. If I’m running multiple shows, I can access individually tailored snapshots. “It’s still good to have cloud skills,” Goerner adds. “People look at a system like AMPP and then want to build things like custom panels for an operator. We provide APIs where people can script and do incredible things with AMPP.” So applying cloud and programming skills to AMPP allows one to do even more powerful things. But using the existing set of apps and tools, people with a broadcast

background and little to no cloud experience can build workflows on AMPP. NATIVE APPROACH Goerner has observed a competing approach to cloud, resulting in some companies taking software or systems that run on computers and forcing those into the cloud – a process she calls ‘lift and shift.’ “You can host a standalone software switcher or replay application in the cloud, but then have to write code to script how to start it up, how to connect it to other applications,” she says. “And if you want to store an overall system configuration of multiple apps, you need to write more code.” With the Grass Valley approach, the production state is stored centrally on AMPP. “It’s triply backed up in a resilient database,” says Goerner. “You can lose an entire [virtual server] and

run from the backup. You can restore a snapshot to a different place and get up and running, or run things in parallel. Not only is it simpler, but it gives you a greater ability for redundancy and it saves time.” But the most important thing about GV AMPP is not just the economic benefit of accessing software as a service. AMPP cloud production also delivers speed,

stability and simplicity for media organisations. “Say there’s a sporting event. OB trucks roll up the day before, since there are eight hours of prep. With AMPP, you still have to connect cameras to an interface, so you can send it to the cloud, but the amount of prep time is greatly reduced. I click on my snapshot and boom, it spins up the production. I still want to check signals and make sure things are working, but the time it takes is greatly reduced. Each application is so much faster to configure than with typical broadcast equipment. And there’s no shipping time. These servers can be anywhere in the world and you can be working live anywhere. If you press buttons on an AMPP switcher, it feels just like making connections in real time. “That’s the power of the cloud. But with AMPP you don’t need to be an expert in cloud scripting – just use your existing skills.”
