QUEENS OF THE CONSOLE The ability to produce high-quality immersive audio content is more important than ever, and choosing the right tools is key. Especially in a live context, mixing immersive audio requires adjustments that go beyond one-offs, such as configuring speakers or preparing a sufficient number of busses to deliver at least ten discrete audio channels (5.1.4). Important technical factors for producing smooth, immersive, live mixes are speed, control and flexibility. This is where the console feature set comes in. Setting up the Atmos or MPEG-H processor and tweaking its settings is ideally something operators can do without leaving the sweet spot. operators need to reach, or walk, to change a setting, the longer it takes to get a job done. In a live context, every split second counts, and switching focus gobbles up time you don’t have in the first place. One reason why mc² consoles are appreciated in live production scenarios is that they can ‘host’ the user interfaces of external hardware and software tools on their TFT screens. SMART AUTOMATION There is more. A truly powerful AutoMix routine not only controls surround and immersive – as well as mono and stereo – channels without ducking a single syllable, but can also be controlled by tracking- based software, such as Kick 2.0.
