Production spaces are getting a clean-up. Removing hardware has made way for

and all their limitations. The broad use of the word ‘environments’ is intentional, as On-Hertz has demonstrable experience simplifying production processes in a wide range of scenarios. Here are two use cases, demonstrating solution flexibility – and an ability to declutter even the most complex studios.

Through outlets including radio, TV, newspapers and podcasts, DPG Media is the leading media organisation for both the Netherlands and Belgium. “Demand for the classic model of audio engineers was not future-proof,” says head of audio at DPG, Frank Santermans. “A lot was automated and tech was evolving, so my job as an audio operator was going to be redundant in ten years. “I started studying, becoming increasingly interested in workflows under the radar – and how machinery was being built. Through this, I realised so much of audio could be automated.
“When we moved to Antwerp about two years ago, the idea was to build a news gallery with only two multi- technicians,” continues Santermans. Audio was central to achieving this newsroom upgrade, as one of the most easily automated studio elements – with the help of Artisto. DPG’s new live studio configuration leverages a multi-API, software-driven workflow, allowing flexible integration of multiple software solutions working in tandem. “The most recent project was a live set for HLN – where a journalist could get up at any time, when there’s
breaking news. Those live, international feeds could deliver into the studio program, where it could be talked over and switched. All this is done with one technician, due to Artisto’s integration. “Artisto’s API makes it possible to communicate with that fader from a computer keyboard. If you hit the space bar, you can generate an HTTP command and Artisto will take that in through the API,” explains Santermans. Artisto’s comprehensive API tech means that, if there was a guest on the newsroom set, their microphone signal would be programmed instantly, then easily modulated and adjusted going forward. “On-Hertz has developed Artisto to be so user-friendly, it can be controlled by a non-technical journalist. I don’t know any other system that does that.” Artisto has a visually comprehensive connect-the-dots UI – a far cry from needing to bring in third parties to configure automation with hardware. “It took me just one day to figure out Artisto – impossible in a traditional system.”
