Xue explains: “We spent a lot of time getting everything exactly how we wanted regarding look, tracking and integration. Once that work was done, it was amazing how quickly we shot and how much we were able to get in-camera. We captured so much more than expected, allowing for more spontaneity – lots of which made the final edit.” The film was shot on the ALEXA 35 rigged on an MRMC Bolt robotic arm, or shoulder-mounted for more creative and dynamic emphasis. The team also wanted to push themselves with lots of real-time visual effects, adding intensity with vibrant sparks and flames. “For anyone feeling that virtual production is not something they can access, we wanted to highlight that, as long as your creative and team are solid, you can achieve fantastic industry-level content in this size of studio,” concludes McNeilly. “We had a limited budget and time, but facilities like this are designed to ensure shoot days are as productive as they possibly can be.”

SP Studios: an action-packed showcase Canada’s SP Studios opened in 2023 to support commercial and feature productions across a range of high- quality studio environments. ARRI Solutions provided conceptual design, consultancy and technical integration for the facility, including its 14x4m immersive virtual production studio. The team also delivered camera and lighting integration, with an array of ceiling-rigged ARRI SkyPanels and ARRI Orbiters. Moreover, the studios have an inventory of ARRI cameras, lenses and accessories for customers to utilise in their productions. One of the key objectives for SP Studios is to train and educate the filmmaking community on the evolution of virtual production technologies.
