EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
one-off fundraising events. If fitting all of this into the school day (even extending to early morning starts and often Saturdays) is a huge challenge, so too is working out what exactly the extracurricular menu should include. Increasingly, schools are involving students in the decision- making process too. They also regularly review their extracurricular programmes, pruning and adding to them as required. It can sound as if every element of life outside lessons is highly organised. But schools ensure there are times when
the pace is dialled down and students can recharge their batteries. That might mean building dens, climbing trees or just dashing around outside, or playing chess or board games with friends. Schools invest massive amounts of energy in extracurriculars to ensure an educational offering so rounded it could qualify as a ball sport in its own right, but it’s also about having a thoroughly good time. After all, while education has a serious dimension to it, nobody would dispute that it needs to be fun as well.
