THE GROVE CROMER Enjoy stunning surroundings and lavish local cuisine in this family-owned Georgian estate – just a stone’s throw from Cromer beach

D iscover fabulous food, fine accommodation and a truly stunning location on the North Norfolk coast at The Grove Cromer. Just a two-hour drive from central Cambridge, this secluded gem feels a world away from the bustle of urban life, making it a perfect staycation destination for city dwellers in search of a little R & R. The hotel has been in the same family since 1936, when Robert and Hilda Graveling took on the grand country pile and moved in with their young family, turning what was a private home into a thriving guest house. Since then, it’s passed through the generations, with each steward putting their own stamp on the business, while staying true to the original aim of creating a family-friendly hotel with heart. Today, guests can stay within the Georgian house itself, choosing between luxurious suites and cosy, peaceful rooms – or opt for self-catering cottages, of which the Grove has six. For those with a taste for the great outdoors, the beautiful glamping site is a must, offering five Mongolian yurts with gorgeous countryside views and creature comforts like double beds, wood-burning stoves, electricity, cookers and fridges. The Shepherd’s Lodge is the most recent addition, featuring a hot tub, Big Green Egg ceramic BBQ and lounge area. If you can lure yourself away from your lodgings, there are four acres of

countryside to explore around the hotel – as well as a direct woodland path to Cromer’s beaches and cliffs. What’s more, the hotel boasts a large indoor swimming pool for rainy days. The two-AA-Rosette restaurant is the jewel in The Grove’s crown, giving diners a chance to sample the best of the area’s rich array of produce from land and sea. As well as crab and lobster straight from the local coastline, much of the fruit and veg in the dishes can be found growing mere hours before on The Grove’s own grounds. The team is so committed to this philosophy that it’s soon to launch a five- course menu in which all ingredients are sourced from within a 25-mile radius of the hotel – offering a uniquely local experience for visitors. This spring, diners can sample a brand-new menu with both meat and seafood dishes, plus new vegan options. There’s a busy schedule of events on the horizon: stop by on 30 March for a pizza and prosecco party in the fairy-lit giant tipi, or gin and tapas on 4 May. You can also take advantage of special offers including the ‘pamper package’ (£240), which includes dinner, bed and breakfast, plus a relaxing massage.
