TRAVEL

you’ll bed down for the night in the regal Queen Anne house. The mansion has been recently renovated and features modern interior design set against heritage features. For something slightly less grand, but equally charming, the nearby Bethnal&Bec (bethnalandbec.com) is a grown-ups-only rural retreat where you can catch your breath. The sustainable, self-catering homes – carved from original stables – feature hot tubs, wood-burning stoves and honesty pantries, and are the perfect base for long country walks with pit stops at charming local pubs. If Cambridge remains your first love, then two city boltholes could be the answer for a place from which to explore the city’s museums, galleries, river and gardens. Offering the best of both worlds is Turing Locke (lockeliving.com) , a chic aparthotel found in Cambridge’s sustainable new development, Eddington. Named after the revolutionary computer scientist Alan Turing, Turing Locke is made up of a collection of stylish apartments, which each come with fully fitted kitchens, living and dining spaces. Interiors are inspired by mid-century design, with teal velvet sofas, sculptural lighting and light wood features. As well as a gym and retail space, there are dining destinations which include a restaurant, seasonal rooftop terrace, coffee shop, and Dutch, a bar which serves speciality cocktails and tapas-style small plates.

If Cambridge is your first love, two city boltholes could be the answer

The Graduate Cambridge hotel (graduatehotels.com) can be found along the banks of the River Cam, with a design inspired by the city’s academic heritage. The lobby is home to a DNA installation to celebrate Rosalind Franklin, a pioneer in the discovery of DNA at the University of Cambridge, while guest rooms have splashes of ‘Cambridge Blue’, and wood and leather desks give a nod to student life. Locality is celebrated here – from the contemporary restaurant Garden House, which focuses on East Anglian produce, to the partnership with Scudamore’s – offering guests punting tours – and the Cambridge Distillery for ‘gin dinner’ with paired courses designed by star chef Adam Wood. It just goes to show that there really is no place like home.
