TRAVEL

Hounds on Hols Vicky Saynor, owner of Bethnal&Bec in Hertfordshire, shares her top UK staycations for dog lovers

Travelling with your dog can be so much fun! No seeking out a dog sitter, your furry friend gets to experience new adventures, and a cuddle at the end of a long day is always nice. Canine travel is a great way to see the UK, but it’s important to do your research before you go: make sure you’re ready for things like transport, the dog-friendliness of the town you’re staying in, any restrictions for your accommodation – and eating out. Here are three of my favourite places we’ve stayed in the UK with our dog, Hendrix. MARGATE, KENT

A quintessentially British seaside town, Margate has a promenade for strolling along with your pup, fish and chips on the beach and lots of cute shops and art galleries. When you’re ready to relax, head to a dog-friendly pub or hotel – many of which have their own beer gardens – perfect for a pint or two while your four- legged friend has a snooze. I recommend The Dog House, a comfortable B&B run by the lovely Fi & Mel. It’s in a quiet but accessible part of town – and Fido even gets his own cooked breakfast. doghousemargate.com

COTTERED, HERTFORDSHIRE

A short drive away, Hertfordshire is overlooked by tourists, but there are many quaint towns and villages here, perfect for weekends away. Cottered is one such village, with an award-winning pub, thatched cottages and miles of trails – perfect for walkies! Bethnal&Bec Luxury Stays is a self-catered retreat that’s dog friendly, with outdoor doggie showers and a one-acre Zoomie paddock! The humans get a jacuzzi, bedroom cinema and lots of tips for where to eat and relax locally. bethnalandbec.com

by vast Norfolk skies and 2,500 acres of farmland. The working estate – renowned for its sustainable approach to modern farming and home to the Soames family, descendants of Winston Churchill – has just launched a set of renovated barns. Tucked between the hills, marshes and salt-washed coastline, Barsham Barns (barshambarns.co.uk) is just the spot for rural homestays with family and friends. The six barns (which vary in size, sleeping four to 14) are decorated by interior designer Flora Soames. Jewel colours and whimsical prints are her signature – and she’s in full stride here, with each barn oozing character. Restored original features as well as items from local craftspeople and Norfolk brands have also been woven throughout the renovation.

SCARBOROUGH, NORTH YORKSHIRE For exploration and breathtaking scenery, North Yorkshire is hard to beat. Enjoy coastal walks with your pup, taking in the fresh sea air and stunning views. Visit one of Scarborough’s quaint pubs such as The Belly Rub, for a meal by the fire and a warm welcome for your pooch! If you’re feeling active, there are hiking trails aplenty, plus the large sandy beaches of the east coast. Check out Seascape, North Bay, a cosy apartment in a large townhouse overlooking the beach, just by the castle. homesweetholidayhomes.com
