Q: After many years, I’m reconnecting with a friend from school over dinner. I want to take them somewhere fun or novel so that the evening is a success. Where can I take them in Cambridge for an entertaining meal without any awkwardness? A: I’m glad to hear that you and your friend are back in touch. Your venue needs to strike the right balance between good value and good quality. Too far in either direction and it could tarnish your reunion – especially since ambience is an underrated part of the dining experience. You don’t want to put too much pressure on this meeting, but you also want to enjoy a pleasant meal out together. Sharing food is one of the best ways to reconnect with an old acquaintance. You can talk about the dishes you want to try, compare opinions and debate about the menu. It offers a conversation topic and shared ground, and sometimes the dishes you’re eating will spark interesting anecdotes or fond memories. To help you, I’ve picked restaurants offering something a little bit different – but that still have a convenient city-centre location and great atmosphere. First up is The Tiffin Truck on Regent Street, a bar and restaurant serving Indian street food and home-style favourites. Think pani puri, masala dosa and paneer butter masala. Also on offer is a wide variety of Indian sweet treats, like kulfi, barfi and gulab jamun, which are definitely worth trying out. Visit Thanh Binh

good reason. The food is mouth-watering, the ambience is excellent and the menu has something for everyone. My favourites are the djedj m’hamer (chicken marinated in a tahini cream sauce and served with green beans) as well as a traditional mint tea, poured in front of you for a bit of fun mealtime theatre. If any of those sound a little too adventurous, you can’t go wrong with Scott’s All Day for a nice pizza. It’s reliable with a good atmosphere – and close to plenty of pubs you could visit afterwards if the reunion goes well. Or if you want to grab a hot drink together after your meal, I can definitely recommend coffee from Bould Brothers on Round Church Street, or the incredible hot chocolate from the newly opened Knoops on Green Street. Good luck!

and good wine – if you’re in need of Dutch courage. The menu is seasonal and constantly changing. I can vouch for the pint of prawns with aioli and aged tuna with furikake. Bedouin is
