In part two of this special review series, DOP Ash Connaughton looks at how the Fujifilm GFX100S handles different lighting extremes THE VERSATILE CAMERA
It records up to 10-bit 4:2:0 400Mbps H.265 footage internally, and up to 17:9 DCI 4K 4096x2160 at 29.97p. However, the UHD 16:9 3840x2160 mode actually uses more of the sensor area than the DCI 4K, so is less prone to moiré. It also has better image quality overall and is the video format that Fujifilm recommends for best performance in video. While the GFX100S doesn’t have the best slow-motion capabilities, it still offers 50p and 59.94p at DCI 2K 2048x2160 and Full HD 1920x1080. Aside from its internal recording, the camera can also output 12-bit Raw at UHD 4K up to 29.97p over its micro HDMI port. Fujifilm includes a bracket that can be screwed directly on to the body of the camera to help keep the cable secure in the port. External recorders, such as the Atomos Ninja V and upcoming Ninja V+, can record the footage as 12-bit Apple ProRes Raw. This makes it the world’s first commercially available medium format Raw video shooting system. IN THE SHALLOW END My recent film, The Heart Asunder , was shot as one continuous take, outside and in natural daylight, on a Fujifilm GF80mm f/1.7 R WR lens (63mm Super-35 equivalent) at f/2, ISO 800 and 1/50 shutter. IN THE FIRST of this two-part review series, I focused on the amazing AF and IBIS capabilities of the Fujifilm GFX100S (see the June issue for more on this). Now, I want to dig deeper into the camera specs by giving it the ultimate test drive against different lighting conditions, found indoors and out. As I briefly discussed in my previous review, the GFX100S has an enormous sensor – a 43.8x32.9mm beast that is packaged in a very unique offering, since no other medium format video/stills hybrid exists at the reasonable price of £5499.
