LIGHTING
Lighting innovation Aputure Infinibar
Innovation is also rife in the category of lighting, where LEDs rule – from powerful, COB-style fixtures to tube lights and panels. The ever- widening range includes daylight, bicolour, RGB, RGBW and RGBLAC, all controllable by an app or DMX. When it comes to creativity, tube lights are portable, inexpensive ways to add light to a set. From single- colour tubes to units containing pixel arrays, there are loads of options. In the innovation category, the winner is the Aputure Infinibar. Far more than just tube lighting, these are mini, flat-panel lights with 48 different pixels that operate in a variety of colour modes. The 1ft, 2ft and 4ft variations each come with a fitted case, mains power block and two mounting options. Since the Infinibars are flat rather than round, they are consistent all the way along. The mounting system allows several to be joined together to form complex shapes. Each bar’s battery can operate at 100% for 100 minutes but also be mains powered. The RGBWW chipset produces a colour temperature range of 2000- 10,000K with full green-magenta adjustment. It also has advanced hue, saturation and intensity control for a wide gamut of accurate colours. Slim is also the name of the game for the light panel category winner, Nanlite’s Pavoslim 120C. The full- colour LED 2x1 panel is a slimline tonic compared to huge COB lights fitted with parabolic modifiers. The Pavoslim’s metal build dissipates heat well so no cooling fan needed.
A separate power pack where you can alter settings is attached by a cable. Alternatively, use the Nanlink app or wireless DMX. Also included is a small softbox that you can leave attached permanently via

hook-and-loop fasteners. It’s all portable and very quick to set up. Power is supplied via the included mains cable, but you can also use your own batteries with the pack’s V-Mount plates. If you’re a hybrid shooter who creates stills as well as movies, take a look at the hard light category. The winning Godox FV150 is a hybrid flash and LED unit which is great for both kinds of work. It’s not as powerful as a standard flash, but pumps out around four times the output of an LED light and flashes at all sync speeds, up to 1/8000sec. Using the LED continuous lighting is as easy as turning it on and adjusting power via the panel at the unit’s rear or with the included remote control. In continuous mode, this COB LED light is daylight-balanced, with eight built-in special effects such as storm, TV and broken bulb. The light’s Bowens mount takes lots of accessories and it even has an umbrella mount underneath its body. In use as a video light, output is consistent and flicker-free. The light is also virtually silent, with no overheating problems.
EDITOR’S CHOICE: SUMOLIGHT SUMOSKY
If you have the budget and space for some serious lighting power, the Sumolight Sumosky is a massive light source in the field of virtual production, which opens up a host of new opportunities for creative cinematographers. The Sumosky is a quick-to-rig, slim, backlit system which can recreate skylights, night lights, sunsets or sky domes for stages. Pairing with harder sources enables the Sumosky to be used for lighting effects in shooting vehicles or fast-paced VFX work. It’s a less-expensive, simpler alternative to the full- immersion video wall taking the market by storm.
