Sennheiser’s magic mic

The incredible sound output from the mini- shotgun MKE 400 belies its compact size T he winner of the best DSLR-type mic in the Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards proves that you can pack a lot of technology into a compact package, yet still deliver fantastic results. The Sennheiser MKE 400 came out on top by delivering immersive audio that eliminates background noise for precise sound, especially dialogue. It is optimised to capture speech crisply at around 1-2m away – the typical distance for interviews. But of course, it can be used for so much more. While rival mics tend to be longer to reduce ambient audio and rely on bulkier suspension systems to block wind and handling noise, the MKE 400 uses Sennheiser’s more advanced design to produce stunningly clear sound. Distortion noise is eliminated thanks to the mic’s unique miniature shotgun design, offering better reach and isolation. Its supercardioid polar pattern – achieved through an acoustic interference tube – provides focused and detailed audio while effectively cutting out unwanted sound.

to remove low-frequency noise such as wind or handling noise, as well as a three- step gain sensitivity switch to optimise recording levels and avoid distortion. The gain is either set to zero, -20 or +20dB, which are the most useful settings in most situations. Ideal for DSLR, mirrorless or compact camcorders, the MKE 400 comes with a coiled 3.5mm TRS cable, as well as a TRRS locking cable for smart devices. You can monitor audio directly from the mic thanks to a headphone output with adjustable volume. The compact mic automatically powers on when connected to a camera and off when disconnected, conserving its battery life. Powered by two AAA batteries, it offers up to 100 hours of usage, ensuring it’s ready when you need it. The MKE 400 weighs in at 93.5g and is just 126x67x37mm/5x2.6x1.5in in size – proof that great things really do come in small packages.

To reduce handling noise, especially with smaller cameras like mirrorless models, the MKE 400 boasts integrated shock absorption. The internal suspension mount minimises vibrations – and for windy conditions, the furry windshield cuts down on the bluster. For the right sound in every situation, this stylish mic has both a low-cut filter
