GEAR OF THE YEAR
Facebook Live and YouTube and adds custom, integrated graphics to recordings without an external switcher. The camcorder features a 12x optical zoom lens, a 4K CMOS sensor, records directly to SD media and boasts one-click configuration when joining the same LAN as other cameras. Although the JVC has been superseded by newer models, this means the GY-HM250E is often available at bargain prices. For a more modern streaming and live broadcast solution, to capture footage from places where it would be impossible to place a camera operator, PTZ cameras are booming. Many manufacturers are investing a lot of their tech into these pan, tilt and zoom machines. Canon’s CR-N700 took the win here: a high-end camera that brings 12G-SDI connections and Dual Pixel CMOS AF to this growing market. This flagship Canon is perfect for broadcast thanks to the 4K/60p, 4:2:2, 10-bit imagery produced with its one-inch CMOS sensor and Digic DV7 processor. It features an image-stabilised 15x optical zoom and its AF uses the latest EOS iTR AF X tech, which enables fast, intelligent focusing. The CR-N700 also offers support for protocols like FreeD, NDI HX and SDI for smooth integration into existing workflows and multicamera set-ups.
but this year’s winner is a stand- alone, video-focused model. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K, which stirred up the market with its full-frame sensor, internal Raw recording and shockingly low price, is not a mirrorless dressed up as a video tool but a unique product for capturing amazing video. The Cinema Camera 6K is based on the chunky body style of the Pocket Cinema Camera range but is the first to have a full-frame 24x36mm 6K sensor. The EF mount has been dropped in favour of a native mirrorless type –the L-Mount as used in Panasonic, Sigma and Leica cameras. This camera delivers a more cinematic look with the shallow depth-of-field associated with full- frame sensors, as well as lots of size and shape options, including open gate 6K to true 6:5 anamorphic, without further cropping. And it costs about the same as the older Super 35 6K Pro model. Live events and streaming are continuing to grow exponentially, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the winner of the camcorder category comes from JVC, a brand that has always focused on this. Ease of use, affordability and its small size make the GY-HM250E a clear winner. It’s a compact, yet full-featured professional camcorder which delivers 4K, streams straight to
EDITOR’S CHOICE: SONY BURANO
Sony has done everything in its
power to make the Burano one of the greatest all-round cameras ever, which is why it’s the Editor’s choice of cinema camera. It’s a usable,
single-shooter camera for indie productions at every level, which offers stunning images virtually indistinguishable from the flagship Venice 2. Of course, the price is enough to put off many potential buyers. A lot cheaper than the Venice 2 but not inexpensive, forking out the asking price requires serious clients and a need for the incredible quality this camera can produce.
