GEAR OF THE YEAR

the specs and video performance of last year’s winner. The Z 8 also has the same stacked sensor, speedy processor and variety of codecs. It even has two USB-C ports – one for charging and one for data – where the Z 9 has just one. This is the best-ever Nikon camera for hybrid shooters with video Raw that’s simply stunning and gives the Z series the edge over other mirrorless cameras. For something more focused on movies, the hybrid/crossover camera has become an important class. These models blur the lines between conventional mirrorless and pure cinema cameras. Some comprise little more than a mirrorless sensor with an added fan to keep things cool or more mounting points for accessories,

That brand is Nikon, which started its massive fightback last year with the Nikon Z 9. The Z 9 won this class due to its stacked sensor, high resolution and huge choice of codecs including internal Raw capture. It put Nikon back on the map for hybrid stills and video shooters but wasn’t ideal for filmmaking. An integrated battery grip meant it didn’t meet the form factor filmmakers need for use on rigs, gimbals or drones and it was a tad heavy and pricey. This year’s winner is the Z 9’s little brother, the Nikon Z 8. It’s cheaper, smaller and lighter, yet retains the sensor and almost all

EDITOR’S CHOICE: PANASONIC LUMIX S5 II

Panasonic’s Lumix S5 II builds on its original full-frame S5 model but adds phase detection AF to make it competitive with rivals. As well as having lots of codec improvements, the S5 II is a great, all-round camera for stills and video, yet still undercuts the prices of all its full-frame competitors. That’s why it’s the editor’s choice in the mirrorless class. If you do want more – such as internal Raw or ProRes, 4K/120p or 4:2:2 All-Intra 800Mbps codecs – then you can upgrade the firmware or spend a little extra on the S5 II X. For a great price and spec, the Lumix S5 II is a brilliant camera that uses L-Mount glass, produces great movies and has no overheating issues and an effective AF system.
