42 TECHFEED Media Orchestration
intriguing of these is the VOS360 Channel Origination and Distribution Platform, which is designed to reduce infrastructure costs by providing statmux support in the cloud, and simplify cloud playout workflows by utilising partnerships for traffic management and playout automation with the likes of Aveco, Crispin/ Sony and Florical. Although the expectations and feature set of orchestration solutions is bound to remain diverse, more coherence may be provided by the MPEG Media Orchestration project, which yielded its first finished standards in 2019. Although adoption is still in its infancy, it could ultimately provided a benchmark across broadcasting and beyond. According to Krishna Chandramouli, of project participant the Multimedia and Research Group at Queen Mary University of London, “The new MPEG standard formalises four types of data
structures – timed media data, timed metadata, orchestration data and control information. These different modalities of information and signals have been commonly encountered across several industrial sectors within broadcasting, education, immersive media and security. The architecture of the standard formalises the media processing enablers, thereby supporting interoperability among industrial verticals.” Whatever adoption this or other relevant standards ultimately enjoy, the emphasis of R&D will need to be geared towards allowing broadcasters to focus activity on their content libraries. More than any other single event, Covid-19 has underlined the importance of effective delivery of huge amounts of content, and as such the media industry is going to need to be even more closely attuned to the capabilities of multifaceted orchestration technologies in the future.
