They are not up there by themselves on a pedestal; their whole team should be there to make it happen for the DOP. I’ve been lucky with my crews – they have all been great. I would like to say that there aren’t enough women in lighting, though it’s getting better, and I fully support having more women as part of lighting crews.” SEEING THE LIGHT Staying ahead of the curve is vital for a gaffer, especially with technological advancements in the industry. “It’s about being able to utilise the tools available now, to light things knowing they are capable of many different things and having a grasp of what those are,” Garside explains. “In the end, you are still doing what you’ve always done; you’re just given tools that offer much more versatility.
