Photography News: Choosing the right paper is important when it comes to printing. How do you know if you have chosen the right one? Doug Chinnery: Definitely, the right paper is crucial. The paper you choose to print your image on can make it sing or die. I am a bit of an evangelist about this. I often hear photographers say that they only use one paper. Landscapers often say how they will only print on matt paper and have a favourite. I understand this, of course, as matt papers are beautiful
explain the emotional difference when you see your photographs printed as opposed to seeing themon the screen? Doug Chinnery: That is a tricky question. I would sum it up by saying that images on a screen bore me, they just don’t interest me as much as seeing a physical print. They lack dimension, texture, reality and glitz – it all seems so false – flick the switch off and they’ve gone. Prints, on the other hand, are fascinating. They have a smell, you can close your eyes and touch them, they can be sensuous.
Above all, they are three dimensional and real. Photography News: Do you send your printed photos to anyone? If so, why? Doug Chinnery: Yes, I do. I feel images make a lovely gift for any occasion. They’re a lot more personal throughout the whole process, from capturing the photograph to framing and gifting it. Just today I sent out several for a variety of reasons. There are tons of reasons to do so and I think people appreciate the gesture.
photography? Or helpmake you a better photographer? Doug Chinnery: Striving to make a better print does require you to improve aspects of technique, yes, and that does have its place. Personally, I learn as much as I need to know. I’m not very technical in either my photography or printing. I am interested more in the image itself. I am not as conscious of perfection as many people seem to be. Perhaps that is a failing of mine, I don’t know.
