LOVE LOCAL
For Ian Grundy, local resident since 2020, life in Cambridge surpasses some of the world’s biggest cities!
I’ve lived in Cambridge for five years now, having moved from Singapore. I arrived here during the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant that many of the places to visit were closed – but when they opened up again and I was able to explore, I knew that I wanted to stay. I love it here because there is simply so much to do and see – and it’s so easy to get around. I’ve been fortunate to live and work in some great places – including Hong Kong, Singapore and New York – but right now Cambridge is top of the list of the most enjoyable cities I’ve lived in. The ability to go to the theatre, a bar or restaurant or just stroll by the river – and then be able to cycle home in just ten minutes – makes life in Cambridge very easy and satisfying. The place that means the most to me is the wonderful wild garden that surrounds St Peter’s Church. Garden Kitchen at the neighbouring Kettle’s Yard places deck chairs here as extra seating, and it’s an amazing place to sit and ponder life.
You’re right in the heart of the city – yet it still feels secluded and peaceful. Try it on a warm summer’s morning! The best concert I’ve ever seen here was Michael Kiwanuka at the Corn Exchange in 2022. The concert had been postponed twice, so the audience were really ready for Kiwanuka and his soulful band. One of the reasons it was so great is the atmosphere at the Corn Exchange, as well as the ability to get right up close to the stage – I love that. And, if I can add another, I always enjoy
going to the free lunchtime organ recitals that happen on Saturdays at the colleges, such as Queens’. There are so many free concerts with incredibly talented musicians. When people ask me for local recommendations, I always point them to The Orator on Round Church Street in the heart of the city – it’s a great place for lunch, dinner or a drink. This Cambridge Union bar and restaurant is housed in an incredible historic building that has welcomed famous and important speakers to its chamber over the years. The Orator gives you the opportunity to sit outside – or inside in the spacious bar and restaurant area. It has a great menu and a wide selection of wine and drinks. One thing I’ve never done here, but plan to do, is wild swimming! I spend a lot of time on the River Cam – punting and paddle boarding – but have yet to go wild swimming. I plan to try it out this summer, perhaps on a hot day at the fabulous Grantchester Meadows.
