THE PANDEMIC AND its after-effects are set to go on for a while, but let’s hope 2022 will be more normal than 2020 and 2021. When it comes to new cameras, it has been anything but usual, with several incredible full-frame machines. The Nikon Z 9 most recently joined the Canon EOS R3 and Sony A1 in redefining the market with some amazing tech. And that’s not forgetting the camera tested in this issue, the Fujifilm GFX 50S II – a price- busting, digital medium format. Of course, none of these products are what you would call cheap, with those three mirrorless full-frame models costing over £5k – body only. But they do offer awesome focusing and shooting skills. If you’re a pro, such investment can be more easily justified. We all know it’s the person behind the camera that counts, but the right kit certainly helps. For the rest of us with more modest budgets, hopefully some of those cutting-edge technologies – especially autofocus – cascade down to cheaper products soon. But don’t hold your breath. By the time you read this, Black Friday will have been and gone. You might have already spent the
pennies set aside for your hobby – assuming that stocks were available. Checking several photo retailers’ websites, the words ‘awaiting stock’, ‘pre-order’ and ‘limited’ appeared often. If you have any cash left, then check out this month’s festive buyers’ guide, starting on page 35. Latterly, I packed my cameras and headed to Wales for a short holiday. Aberystwyth’s Royal Pier was top of my to-shoot list. I am getting towards the end of my pier project, with only a few left, all a long way from home. The weather wasn’t kind, but I got something. SIGMA HAS ANNOUNCED its first zoom lens for mirrorless L-Mount and Sony E-mount crop sensor cameras. The 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary offers a full-frame equivalent focal range of 27-75mm, with a wide f/2.8 constant aperture, it delivers high optical performance across the entire zoom range. The Sigma caters for a wide range of photographic styles, including landscape, portrait, street, architecture and event. It is also capable of recording high- quality video, with a maximum magnification of 1:2.8, and a minimum focus of just 12.1cm. Providing an f/2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, it is easy to achieve blurry backgrounds and soft bokeh effects when shooting portraits and close-ups.
High optical performance is guaranteed, with the carefully arranged lens elements – including three high-precision, glass-moulded aspherical elements. Optical imperfections, such as distortion and vignetting, are kept to a minimum by in-camera aberration correction, ensuring images are crisp and clear. The lens uses a stepping motor as the AF actuator, in order to achieve fast and silent AF. This makes it well-suited to shooting in low-noise environments. It’s also a good option for capturing video with audio, due to minimal noise from the AF. Finally, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is extremely portable, resulting in a great option for day-to-day use – ideal for vlogging and creating content on the go. Nikon unveils its most advanced camera ever
The Z 9, Nikon’s mirrorless flagship, is something special. It has a features set that will make other brands green with envy – and at £5299, it’s also cheaper than its main competitors
AS RIVALS CANON and Sony introduced great mirrorless cameras this year, Nikon had to react. It’s done just that with the Z 9, which – it claims – delivers exceptional operability and robustness. The Z 9 is packed with features, including a stacked 45.7-megapixel
full-frame CMOS sensor, an ultra- fast Expeed 7 processor, and Nikon’s most sophisticated, deep learning autofocus that uses a phase/contrast detect system – plus 3D tracking. The sensor is conductive coated, producing a magnetic field to repel dust and debris – and a f luorine coating makes sensor cleaning easier. There is also a physical sensor shield to stop nasties getting in when changing the lens. The AF system has an impressive 493-point AF, with 405 auto-area AF points and ten AF-area modes, allowing for custom settings.
For the first time ever in a Nikon mirrorless camera, 3D tracking helps users keep pace with fast- moving subjects, such as animals and vehicles – the Z 9 is capable of detecting up to nine different subject types at the same time. The camera uses intelligent detection software, recognising the subject – and with continuous AF calculations, it reacts instantly to rapid, even erratic movements. The Z 9 boasts a bright, 3000-nit EVF display and dual- stream technology, guaranteeing always-live, blackout-free shooting. Furthermore, the display provides a continuous, real-time view, so photographers can see even the slightest movement in the scene they are capturing. Full-frame Raw capture is possible at 20fps, with a 1000-shot buffer. If you need even more speed, shoot JPEGs only, to blast away at 30fps. Better still, 120fps is possible with 11-megapixel JPEGs. The Z 9 does all this with an electronic shutter that features a 1/32,000sec top speed, and a f lash sync of 1/200sec or 1/250sec. An auto FP high-speed sync up to 1/8000sec is supported, too. There is no mechanical shutter option.

A five-axis (pitch, roll, yaw, X and Y) in-body image stabilisation gives up to 6EV benefit when using with Z lenses with built-in VR. The camera offers great f lexibility operating the Z 9, thanks to its four-axis vertical and horizontal tilting touch monitor. Shooting upright format images from low or high viewpoints is simple. Nikon has taken on feedback from photographers to aid the ergonomic design of the Z 9 – the camera has a refined body layout. The new AF
mode button lets users switch easily between AF and AF-area modes, when shooting with the eye up to the viewfinder. The LCD control panels and key buttons can also be illuminated for easy operation in the dark. The Nikon Z 9 retails at £5299, body only, and will be available from this winter. Nikon Z lens system grows
Canon has unveiled the PowerShot PX – a small, tabletop camera, loaded with smart features for capturing candid moments. With automatic capture of 11.7-megapixel images and 60p Full HD video, the PowerShot PX lets families relax and enjoy the moment, without worrying about taking pictures themselves. It can be used as a webcam, with photos and videos saved to a memory card – and is charged via a USB-C port. STARTING WITH THE the cheapest of Nikon’s new Z lenses, the Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is a powerful 7.8x zoom, and retails at £599. It weighs just 315g, and its built-in vibration reduction system has a 5EV benefit, while the internal focus mechanism combines with the eye-detection autofocus of some Z cameras. Filter size is 62mm. The Z 24-120mm f/4 S offers advanced optics and broad zoom range in a compact, lightweight body. Key selling points are a constant f/4, minimum focusing distance of 35cm – giving a 0.39x maximum magnification ratio – and Arneo and Nano Crystal coating to suppress ghosting and f lare. It uses two drive units to deliver fast, accurate AF with minimal focus breathing. A lens function button lets you tailor the silent control ring to different functions via
date, and nicely priced at £299, too. The lens weighs just 155g and, at 43mm long, is small enough to slip into a pocket. Silent AF and minimum 19cm focusing distance are other qualities of this dinky optic, that’s a great walkaround lens. Nikon added the Mount Adapter FTZ II, that allows F-mount lenses to be used with Z cameras. It sells for £249, more compact and tripod-friendly than the original. Finally, Nikon has announced the development of the Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, a super-telephoto that incorporates a 1.4x converter. There is no hint of price yet, but our guess will be probably in the order of two Z 9s. nikon.co.uk
The third zoom is the Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S: a fast, high-precision telezoom lens that delivers excellent optical performance. Nikon ED and Super ED glass have been deployed to minimise chromatic aberration, even at wide apertures and close focus distances. It boasts a powerful VR performance with 5.5EV benefit. At the wide end of the zoom range, the lens has a minimum focus distance of just 75cm, which increases to 98cm at 400mm. This long telezoom is priced at £2699, with shipping starting in mid-December. The new prime is a 28mm f/2.8, the smallest full-frame Z lens from Nikon to
The NX-Series filter holder system allows 2mm-thick filters to be used on ultra wide-angle lenses of 14mm or more. It is compatible with Cokin Nuances filters including Clearsky and Infrared 720, and L-size adapter rings from 49mm to 95mm. The NX-Series includes a dedicated polariser that has a 2x filter factor and fits right next to the lens front. It can be rotated to the required angle using the adjustment wheel. The newly improved autofocus is the standout feature of this lens, offering four Sony XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, delivering precise and rapid AF up to four times faster than its predecessor. I’ve been fortunate to be able to try out a brand new Kase Armour Filter system over the past couple of weeks and it’s been an immensely positive experience. One of the reasons I moved to Kase from another were clearly responsive to feedback from users. The Armour system is yet another example of that iterative process where suggestions are listened too, considered and used to fuel the development process. The result is an enhancement on an already exceptional system. The Armour system combines much of the simplicity of the increasingly popular round magnetic systems with the ability to integrate 100x150mm
What we know of the whole design process is that by and large, the slimmest, simplest designs are the best. However, as always, the real proof of the I have no hesitation in recommending this in two ways. Firstly I’m going to give it an unreservedly landscape photography, I cannot fault this new system.
