EDUCATION
Where schools can adapt, they do. They may inspire by bringing in outside speakers. Impington International College hosts career fairs throughout the academic year, as well as running a lecture series where guest speakers – from authors and physiotherapists to lawyers – share insight and lessons from their own careers. At Gresham’s, too, knowledge- expanding talks are a regular feature. They include dedicated weeks celebrating the different aspects of STEAM learning (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), all with ‘talks from keynote speakers, interactive workshops and visits to employers’. Pupils are able to learn more about the variety of roles available, where employers are located, the work they do and the qualifications and skills required. They also receive the opportunity to ask questions, interact with other pupils and gain confidence in networking while finding out about work experience, summer jobs and future career opportunities. Schools innovate – coding is a fixture on the curriculum, with lessons starting from reception age. And they challenge, supportively. The aspirations of The Leys School’s three-year Personal Development, Service and Leadership programme include developing the self-confidence of students, plus interests and passions that will benefit them at school and beyond. They complete a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award t00, gaining a sense of their place in the wider world.
