UK Screen Alliance to host a panel that discussed the ethical and IP challenges posed by generative AI (GenAI) in the VFX industry. The panel featured Lux Aeterna creative technologist James Pollock, UK Screen Alliance CEO Neil Hatton and Dr Cobus Jooste, senior lecturer in IP law at the University of the West of England. They shared insights from Lux Aeterna’s R&D under the MyWorld programme, a UKRI-funded initiative to advance creative technologies, through which Lux Aeterna has been developing AI tools and produced the experimental sci-fi short film RENO to explore GenAI’s potential in VFX. Pollock highlighted RENO as a safe, research-driven avenue for understanding AI’s possibilities and limitations, while Jooste stressed the
documentation and collaboration between technologists and legal experts to responsibly integrate AI into VFX workflows. Neil Hatton emphasised the UK’s leadership in the VFX sector and the significance of including GenAI in the upcoming VFX expenditure credit, starting January 2025. “The UK must lead not just in technology but in sustainable, ethical GenAI adoption that respects creators’ IP,” Hatton stressed.
