When many people think of vacuum cleaners, Hoover springs to mind. For a ballpoint pen, think Biro; Tupperware for plastic food containers; Post-it for sticky notes; Velcro for hook-and-loop fasteners. And with regards to protective camera cases, Peli is the go-to. They are virtually unbreakable, watertight, airtight, dustproof, chemical resistant and corrosion proof, as well as extremely strong and durable. The 1535 has a neoprene O-ring to seal it from the elements, and includes an automatic purge valve for quick equalisation after changes in atmospheric pressure. There are double ABS latches that seal securely, with padlock protectors providing added security. This 1535 has the Trekpak divider system– a unique pin formation allows for flexible adjustment of the dividers, as the contents of the case change.
When Peli’s popular range of hard cases were designed even lighter without affecting the rugged, safe properties that made the brand famous, it was always going to be a smash hit. The Air range is lighter, yet just as sturdy, and has been a massive success since it hit the market. A range of even deeper Air cases has now been developed to carry more kit – ideal for cinema cameras or larger camcorders. Newmodels include this 1646 Air, featuring press and pull latches and a customisable foam insert. Every component in the Air range has been pared-down to shave off weight – some up to 40% less than the standard cases. But they still offer high security, with burly latches and stainless-steel clasps, so you can use padlocks. Plus, it has hard-wearing wheels and an extendable handle. Like the 1535, there is a neoprene O-ring to keep out the elements.
Shimoda might not be the most well- known name in filmmaking, but it is quickly establishing itself as a producer of well-designed and sturdy bags. The DV Roller is made to accommodate large cinema cameras, as well as mirrorless bodies with large lenses. The DV Roller has 100mm all-terrain wheels, wide doctor bag-style opening and a heavy-duty extending handle. It is made with Shimoda’s premiummaterials. It also has the same dimensions as the Shimoda Action X70 backpack, meaning you can quickly transfer gear from roller to backpack by removing the DV core unit from one, then dropping it into the other. Each side of the bag features a full- length zippered pocket. One side is fitted with a travel document and phone sleeve, while the other fits larger accessories. Both sides have a compression strap, to hold a medium-sized tripod if needed.
Pros: Great protection Cons: Obvious target for thieves
Pros: Even more space for bigger kit Cons: Can’t double up as a backpack
Pros: Finally, a bag with big wheels! Cons: Not the most well-known brand
