causes a tiny bit of vignetting and softening, as you would expect, but this only adds to the character. Plus, it’s easy to sort out in post for a super-clinical look. The Xeen CFs also have new coatings to improve image quality and reduce ghosting. This works well, although there is pleasing flare when provoked – exactly what you want from a fast prime. Point light sources create starburst flare, which looks good, but isn’t overpowering. Xeens are sharp right across the frame, certainly when stopped down, and produce consistent and slightly warm colours. That’s flattering for skin tones right out of camera, without any work in post. They have lost the slight green tinge of the older Xeens, for sure. Resolving power is excellent – certainly up to the 8K footage we tried on the Sony A1. Until resolutions take another massive hike, which could be decades away, these are long-termbuys.

These Xeen CF lenses are far more usable for a wider range of compact cameras now they have been shrunk in size – but not in performance. They’re great, with a smooth focus ring and iris ring, perfect with a follow focus for precise control. Optical quality is excellent, with a slightly warm look many will like. Or, it can be easily neutralised in post. Of course, there is no in-built image stabilisation or autofocus, and being solidly made, are heavier than most DSLR AF lenses. They are fast, flare nicely and work well as a set. And with no electronics to get in the way of using with different cameras, play well with adapters. For the price, the Xeens offer excellent value for money and will pay back long into the future.
