And for speed junkies, right now you can record 4K in 120fps or HD in 300fps. It’s impressive spec, and the performance is incredible, too. The GH6 definitely has its place in the market, and Panasonic always does a fantastic job making its cameras great for video creators. However, after all the delays and promises, many might have been expecting a little bit more. Panasonic’s stubbornness to implement a more modern autofocus system into its cameras is frustrating. If this is something that matters to you, then Canon or Sony would be far better options. However, what people gloss over when making these complaints is that the perfect camera doesn’t exist. When compared to the Sony A7 IV or Canon EOS R6, the GH6 has improved stabilisation, impressive battery life, truly unlimited recording, better internal codec options and frame rates – and more video-orientated features. Whether the benefits of full-frame and a far improved autofocus system outweigh the cons of these cameras over the GH6, is completely up to you. But if Panasonic had more mature AF in this camera – at this price – it would have absolutely dominated the sub-£3000 market when it comes to shooting moving images.

QUARTER MASTER The GH6 is filled with filmmaking features in an affordable package. The Micro Four Thirds sensor may not be to everyone’s liking, as it’s quarter the area of full-frame, but offers some unique benefits

A second comparison is between the GH6 and more cinema-orientated cameras: the Blackmagic Pocket 4K, 6K and 6K Pro and Z Cam E2-M4. Honestly, it features some stiff competition here, mainly from Blackmagic. The 4K and 6K Pro offer impressive value for money. Image quality can be subjective, but the 6K Pro edges it out in dynamic range. The GH6’s biggest positives are ergonomics, form factor, weather sealing, EVF, a comprehensive menu, in-camera stabilisation, lens adaptability, AF and battery life. The 6K Pro has better inputs and outputs on the body, internal NDs, Blackmagic’s fantastic BRAW and a 1000-nit screen on the back. The Pocket 4K is almost half the price, and while battery life isn’t great, it’s still the best option for filmmakers wanting to spend as little as possible on a camera.
