1 Take a train to the North Pole 30 November - 24 December, Nene Valley Railway, Peterborough Nene Valley Railway offers a magical round- trip train experience from Wansford station near Peterborough, 30 November to 24 December. Tickets cost £35 and include a fully immersive festive experience with 14 professional actors playing Christmas characters – including Santa, his elves and Frostine the winter fairy. Journey through an autumn forest, a snow-frosted portal and Santa’s workshop. Help the elves make toys in Santa’s workshop, meet Mr and Mrs Claus, receive a Christmas gift from Santa in his lodge, then settle in for a round trip through the Cambridgeshire countryside from Wansford station – usually by steam train, but occasionally a diesel. nvr.org.uk

2 See a 21-metre-long fin whale 8 November, Museum of Zoology The Museum of Zoology is part of Cambridge University and is a fantastic destination for families with inquisitive kids. It’s free to enter and boasts some stirring exhibits such as a 21-metre-long fin whale skeleton, a giant sloth, a dodo skeleton, fossils and taxidermy animal specimens from around the world. Book a free tour called ‘From Darwin to dodos’ on 8 November at 3pm, which explores evolution. museum.zoo.cam.ac.uk 3 Feed their minds with science Saturdays and Sundays, Cambridge Science Park The new Science Centre is perfect for young minds to challenge themselves with fresh concepts. Families can visit on weekends and school holidays to explore more than 20 hands-on exhibits. Attend shows including Stronger by Design , Gums to Bum and Sonic Science . Friendly science communicators are present to support your children’s exploration as they tackle each challenge. Tickets cost £20 for adults, £15 for children aged five to 17 and £7.50 for children two to four. cambridgesciencecentre.org 4 Go skating on Parker’s Piece 14 November - 5 January, Parker’s Piece Parker’s Piece is hosting its annual pop-up ice rink from 14 November to 5 January. There will also be a Christmas tree maze, a lively chalet festive market, hot food and drink, as well as a big wheel offering panoramic views over the city (family tickets £20 plus booking fees).
