MOON IN CLOSE-UP

MOON SHOT The X-H2S has a 7EV benefit IBIS and it helped get this sharp handheld shot taken at 1/15sec, which is remarkable bearing in mind the focal length used. The lens was the 150-600mm at 600mm with the 1.4x converter, so the focal length was 840mm (1280mm in 35mm format)

grid for zone and tracking modes, or 425 points in a 25x17 array for single point selection. Add to this the option of wide area, zones and single point with the option of several sizes, and you have a versatile, flexible system. The only option missing is the ability to create custom AF areas. Where the X-H2S has taken a big step forward is with its advanced focusing algorithms, the ability of the sensor to read data at 120fps and its deep learning technology – with subject detect skills including animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, airplanes and trains. Human AF with face and eye detect has also seen a performance boost. In general conditions, the X-H2S’s AF abilities with the Fujifilm XF33mm f/1.4 and Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 were impressive and accurate – whether in wide area, zone or single AF point modes. I had the new XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 on hand, so spent quite a lot of time with it on the X-H2S to give it a real test. In 35mm format terms, this lens has a 229-914mm range, so we are talking seriously long telephoto reach. It is compatible with Fujifilm 1.4x and 2x converters for even greater pulling power. The X-H2S’s AF worked very smartly with this long lens. I used it for birds, butterflies and scenics, including sunsets. I did find less well-defined subjects or areas where contrast was low or more challenging, and the AF could search – but this would be the same with other AF systems. With a sunset,

PERFORMANCE: HIGH-SPEED SHOOTING

moment, and it’s also true that for most of us, such speed is not required every day. There is a pre-shot option with the electronic shutter. If you partially depress the shutter button, you ‘take’ shots without actually recording them. And when you do fully depress the button, you get shots at whatever shooting rate you have set – and that includes 40fps – from 0.5sec previously. Autofocusing in the X-H2S is impressive: accurate, slick, responsive and silent. The system uses phase and contrast detect sensors and, like other Fujifilm X Series models, there is the choice of 117 AF spots in a 13x9 THUMB SIDE The right rear of the X-H2S will look familiar to anyone who has used a recent Fujifilm X-camera. Most controls can be user-customised

BIRD FEED Here’s what a feeding sparrow looks like at 40fps. Shot with the 150-600mm at 600mm, with an exposure of 1/640sec at f/8 and ISO 800
