AUDIO S ound advice for any aspiring filmmaker is to concentrate on capturing the best audio you can – it’s been the let- down of many a production. That’s why it’s important to arm yourself with the best microphones as well as all the ancillary kit for the job at hand. It’s an area where one size doesn’t fit all; recording a rock gig is very different to an interview. Whatever cameras they choose, most serious professionals rely on XLR mics such as the Rode NTG5, the Sennheiser MKE 600 and high- end MKH 416. These are great all- rounders – but for more specialised use, small shotguns from Rycote can offer even better results if you know how to get the best out of them. Alternatively, you may see more benefit in adapters like the latest Beachtek DXA-Max, which lets you use high-end XLR mics on just about any camera with a 3.5mm input jack – or the Panasonic DMW-XLR1E and Tascam CA-XLR2d XLR adapters, which grant advanced features for either Panasonic Lumix or Canon cameras respectively.
