AWARDS GEAR OF THE YEAR

AUDIO S ound advice for any aspiring filmmaker is to concentrate on capturing the best audio you can – it’s been the let- down of many a production. That’s why it’s important to arm yourself with the best microphones as well as all the ancillary kit for the job at hand. It’s an area where one size doesn’t fit all; recording a rock gig is very different to an interview. Whatever cameras they choose, most serious professionals rely on XLR mics such as the Rode NTG5, the Sennheiser MKE 600 and high- end MKH 416. These are great all- rounders – but for more specialised use, small shotguns from Rycote can offer even better results if you know how to get the best out of them. For DSLR-type mics, the Canon DM-E1D and Sony ECM-B1M house multi-interface hotshoe tech to get rid of wires and can be incredible for owners of compatible cameras. For more universal solutions, look at the Joby Wavo Pro, Sennheiser’s MKE 400 and MKE 200, the Rode Videomic Go II and incredibly popular Videomic NTG. In the audio recorder/adapter category, the latest news is all about 32-bit float technology, where the range of sound captured is so wide you don’t need to worry too much about setting levels. The Tascam Portacapture X8 and Zoom F3 are popular 32-bit float recorders. Or, the well-proven Tascam DR-70D and Zoom H8 recorders might win your vote for their small form factor and impressive features. Alternatively, you may see more benefit in adapters like the latest Beachtek DXA-Max, which lets you use high-end XLR mics on just about any camera with a 3.5mm input jack – or the Panasonic DMW-XLR1E and Tascam CA-XLR2d XLR adapters, which grant advanced features for either Panasonic Lumix or Canon cameras respectively. Wireless mics nominated for awards include the Sound Devices A20-Mini, Sennheiser EW-DP and Deity Theos. But also take a look at the popular wireless DJI Mic, Hollyland Lark M1, Joby Wavo Air, Rode Wireless Go II and Saramonic Blink 500 Pro. Have your say and vote now.
