This not-for-profit independent cinema is a great source of local pride. With a full-size screen, 200 cinema seats and Dolby Digital surround sound, Saffron Screen operates out of Saffron Walden County High School and is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (with extra special screenings occasionally available). Saffron Grange
This boutique, family-run vineyard situated on the south-facing slopes on the outskirts of the town has earnt a name for itself on the English sparkling wine scene. Saffron Grange has just launched its 2024 vineyard tours and tastings, offering an informative and relaxed way to explore the site. Learn all about growing season, the local landscape, and take advantage of trying the full range of sparkling wines – perfectly paired with an option of cheese, charcuterie and seafood grazing boards, all sourced from local producers. Tours are popular so early booking is advised! Other events include supper clubs, sparkling wine tastings, family-friendly tours and food truck events at the vineyard throughout summer. MINI MISS
Although crowds continue to flock to the Mini Miss Bread bakery on Church Street for loaves of freshly baked sourdough, it’s worth extending your visit with a trip to the new Mini Miss Upstairs cafe. Having taken over the upstairs space in the Angela Reed homewares shop, Mini Miss is now serving fresh, seasonal food using local produce wherever possible, including fruit and veg from Flourish Farm Shop in Hildersham and Audley End House’s Organic Kitchen Garden. The coffee is roasted locally by Wood St Coffee Roasters, and the counter is bursting with treats – including their famous cinnamon buns! These scenic gardens – known for their famous Hedge Maze, Walled Garden and picturesque parterre – were created in 1840 by Francis Gibson – the local Quaker entrepreneur who is also known for establishing the Fry Art Gallery. Elizabeth, Francis’ daughter, wed Lewis Fry of Bristol and in 1918, the Fry family entrusted the garden to the local council, marking its transition to a public space. Welcoming visitors through entrances along Castle Street, Bridge Street and adjacent to the Cricket Field, the Garden has remained accessible throughout the year – save for Christmas Day – inviting all to enjoy its beauty at no cost.
