Saffron Hall This local venue has put the affluent market town on the map thanks to its rich programme of cultural events. Since opening in 2013 with a season of just 12 concerts, Saffron Hall now boasts a world-class music programme including two Resident Orchestras, classical, opera, folk, big band, brass band, swing, jazz, world and genre-defying music. Dance and spoken word have also since been added to the programme. The venue is run by the Saffron Hall Trust – an arts and education charity bringing exceptional musical performances to local and regional audiences, raising aspirations among young people, and promoting well-being in the community. Some highlights for April include renowned author Anthony Horowitz reflecting on his life and career, plus a performance from rising star of Jazz Samara Joy. saffronhall.com

Another key fixture of the Saffron Walden culture scene, this gallery was inaugurated in 1987 and showcases a substantial collection of paintings, prints, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs created by artists with local ties from the 20th century to present day. The gallery particularly highlights those who established themselves in Great Bardfield from the early 30s until the passing of John Aldridge RA in 1983, after residing in the village for half a century. On 7 April, the gallery will open two new exhibitions: ‘Working Women – the art of Sheila Robinson and Chloë Cheese’ and ‘Great Bardfield and Beyond: A Working Landscape’, which includes works by the painter Eric Ravilious (pictured). fryartgallery.org FRY ART GALLERY
