New zoom is a real power play Canon’s new RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM feels like the lens the EOS R6 V was designed around. Covering an ultra wide 20mm to a standard 50mm, it offers a highly practical range for documentaries, travel and vlogs. It is Canon’s first full-frame RF L-series lens with a built-in power zoom. Unlike conventional zooms, which rely solely on you twisting a ring, this lens contains two Nano USM motors dedicated to driving the zoom mechanism electronically for smooth takes in video. On the EOS R6 V, you can also control the lens with the camera’s built-in zoom rocker, making it feel much more like operating a dedicated video camera than using a stills camera. You can even trigger zooms remotely using the Canon app or compatible Bluetooth remotes. Mounted on the R6 V, the combination proved exceptionally well balanced. The £1439/$1399 lens is compact enough for handheld work and gimbals, yet still carries the robust, weather-sealed construction expected of Canon’s L-series optics. The wide 20mm end is particularly useful for self-shooting, interiors and establishing shots, while 50mm provides enough reach for interviews and tighter compositions without constantly changing lenses. Footage is impressively sharp across the frame, even wide open, with excellent contrast and rich, natural colours. Distortion at the widest focal length is well controlled frustrated mirrorless filmmakers for years, especially when shooting interviews, events or live streams where cameras need to roll continuously. Canon’s active cooling transforms that experience, allowing effectively unlimited recording in many formats without worrying about overheating. That alone separates the R6 V from the EOS R6 Mark III. For event shooters, documentary filmmakers and content creators producing long-form videos, reliability often matters more than another headline specification. You can keep filming for extended periods in demanding conditions, even in the UK’s summer heatwaves. The C50 also has cooling, but the R6 V offers similar cinema quality without the Cinema EOS prices and deep menus. Despite its creator-friendly appearance, the R6 V is anything but entry level. and flare resistance is excellent, allowing confident shooting into challenging light. Focus breathing is minimal enough not to distract during focus pulls. The Nano USM drive works quickly and tracks smoothly. Focus transitions appear natural, making the lens particularly good for solo operators. Although some may wish for a faster f/2.8 aperture, the constant f/4 helps keep the lens relatively compact and affordable while pairing perfectly with the R6 V’s highly effective in-body image stabilisation.

are the sort of specs previously used by more expensive cinema cameras. And sharing its imaging pipeline with the Cinema EOS C50 means image quality is virtually identical. The difference lies in the body around the sensor rather than the pictures it produces. Open gate recording is especially useful for modern delivery, allowing cropping of the same footage for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or traditional widescreen without shooting multiple versions. If you’re making content across several platforms, that’s a real workflow advantage, not a gimmick. One difference between the three Canon cameras is base ISO. Like the Cinema EOS

range, the EOS C50 offers dual base ISO at 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2, which a user can select. The R6 V and R6 Mark III don’t have base ISO in the same way, but they do use dual gain architecture to switch to 6400 automatically. This produces very good low- light performance thanks to the sensor and Canon Log 2. Built for working alone The EOS R6 V feels like it’s been designed by people who actually create content. There is a front tally lamp, front record button, vertical tripod socket, vertical user interface and controls that prioritise video operation rather than still photography.
