LOVE LOCAL

In this new interview series, we get to the very heart of the city via the people who love it most – its residents! First up is Toby Hoten… I grew up in a

I’ve lived in Cambridge for just over five years. I moved here for a job I fell in love with, and into a house share with some complete strangers who have become my best friends. It was the single best decision I’ve ever made. I still can’t believe my luck, and I attribute a lot to Cambridge itself. I’ve found my home here. I love it here because Cambridge has everything I was looking for in a place to live. Parks, beautiful architecture, river walks, peace and quiet, hustle and bustle and small independent businesses. I grew up in a quaint little village and lived in East London for years, and Cambridge mixes together my favourite parts of both. There are a few special places here for me, but I do particularly enjoy the wall opposite the shops on King’s Parade. It’s a popular spot, but I like to sit there and watch the world go by, reflecting on my time here and how happy it makes me.

There’s also a very special bench, but I think I’ll keep that one to myself. My favourite gig I’ve been to here was The Olllam earlier this year, at the Cambridge Junction. The crowd’s energy was so vibrant and joyful. One of my favourite exhibitions was Paris 1924 at the Fitzwilliam. Not only did they have an edition of my favourite sculpture ever, but the exhibition was designed beautifully. When people ask me for local recommendations, I always point them towards The Cherry Pit on King Street. I’m a happy regular at this 50s diner-style cafe and record shop and can’t recommend it enough! For nightlife, I’ll always vouch for Funk Jam nights at La Raza. One thing I’ve never done here, believe it or not, is punting! My housemates and I have discussed building one and sailing to the pub, but this is still at planning stage.
