STUDIOS SUSTAINABILITY

A cornerstone of the studio’s sustainability strategy is the use of 100% renewable energy for electricity and maintaining a zero waste to landfill policy. The reliance on renewable energy significantly reduces carbon emissions, addressing one of the most pressing issues of global warming. Similarly, the zero waste to landfill policy helps mitigate the harmful effects of waste decomposition in landfills, such as the release of carbon and methane emissions. However, this policy also presents challenges, such as managing waste that must be incinerated for biomass fuel. To combat this, 3 Mills Studios is dedicated to reducing overall waste in ways such as minimising waste- generating processes, reusing materials and enhancing recycling efforts. These policies have spurred further initiatives, including the phase-out of gas boilers in favour of electric systems, ensuring all food waste is directed to anaerobic digestion facilities and exploring on-site composting options. Additionally, the studio emphasises the use of crockery over vegware products to reduce waste further. The studio’s environmental efforts extend beyond energy and waste management. The site has biodiverse green spaces, including an area known as Buggingham Palace. These green spaces enhance the local environment, promote biodiversity and provide a pleasant environment for both clients and wildlife. The increase in wildflower

diversity and wildlife sightings attests to the success of these initiatives, and the positive feedback from production teams underscores their impact on wellbeing. The commitment to sustainability is also evident in the studio’s infrastructure developments. New electric vehicle chargers have been installed, and only generators using HVO fuel are permitted on-site, with productions often opting for even greener battery units. Future plans include increasing the power supply to stages and unit base areas, eliminating the need for generators entirely. This shift towards an all-electric operation by removing the final gas boilers will further reduce emissions. 3 Mills Studios is also transitioning all lighting to energy-saving LED lights, focusing on both stages and common areas. This not only lowers energy consumption but reduces carbon emissions due to the extended lifespan of LED lights. “We are working with our waste management provider to create easy and practical reuse and recycling streams for productions, so props and sets can be given a second life or recycled if need be,” de Carvalho adds. At 3 Mills Studios, the future is green; its focus is on drastically reducing emissions and waste, providing easy reuse options and optimising recycling. The team aspires to achieve zero biomass waste, turning its zero to landfill policy into a zero to biomass reality. It’s a challenging goal, but one it‘s passionately committed to make happen.

MAKE CAPITAL Positioned on a scenic island in east London, 3 Mills Studios is equipped with more than 75,000 sq ft of filming space

the following years. Albert also provides useful suggestions on how to increase sustainability across the site. Reviewing these suggestions allows us to create an economical plan that focuses efforts on items that are the most beneficial to the planet, prioritising climate-affecting issues such as radically reducing and eventually eliminating the use of gas on-site,” explains de Carvalho. Over a year, 3 Mills Studios’ score leapt from 21 to 71, reflecting a nearly 250% improvement and earning them a ‘very good’ rating. “Participating in the Standard is a great framework for measuring and improving our sustainability efforts. It helps us to help others, as we aid productions on-site to meet their sustainability goals, and work with other studios so we can all do better together,” enthuses de Carvalho.
