MISSION: COMPOSTABLE! A new initiative from Cambridge BID, Mission: Compostable is supporting local businesses and customers to become more eco-friendly. Lots of Cambridge takeaways and cafes buy compostable is transformed into a soil conditioner and sold to the agricultural, viticultural and horticultural markets, where it will be used to grow more food. The project is steadily gaining momentum,

with retailers encouraged to display point-of-sale signs and chat to customers, spreading the word and ensuring bins are used correctly. The biggest hurdle is contamination: as with regular recycling bins, the system relies on putting the right items in the right place. This is why the four bins are located close to retailers that use compostables and are engaged with the project. Some soil conditioner has made its way back to Cambridge. In May and June this year, the Ainsworth Area Residents’ Association and Gwydir Street Friends received free

cups, pails and wrapping, which avoids plastic and is more sustainable. But products must be disposed correctly to achieve a true ‘closed-loop’ process. Mission: Compostable helps customers complete the loop. Four bright-green bins in the city centre (on King’s Parade, Free School Lane, Quayside and Station Road) are suitable only for food scraps and certified packaging. These are emptied by Countrystyle and taken a short distance to be composted in St Ives, Cambridgeshire (at Envar’s in-vessel composting site). Here, the city’s waste

deliveries from Countrystyle, for their gardens. This celebrated their registration as Happy Bee Streets, renovating community gardens with bee-friendly boxes and hanging baskets. cambridgebid.co.uk/mission-compostable AT YOUR DISPOSAL Mission: Compostable is joining up with Cambridge food hotspots, like market favourite Neide’s (above), to make the city more sustainable
