F or more than three decades, back squash and running, years of high-impact exercise, poor footwear and a sedentary job left him with compressed discs in his lower spine. At 6ft 3in, everyday activities such as travelling or sitting in cramped spaces had become uncomfortable. And even after having surgery to remove the disc material pressing on his nerves 25 years ago, the nagging pain never truly disappeared. Years of frustration Determined to stay active, Andy relied on gentle exercise and regular osteopathic treatments. These brought temporary pain was a constant part of Andy’s life. Once an active man who enjoyed relief, but flare-ups always returned. Long car journeys were particularly punishing – which affected one of his greatest joys: travelling to Cornwall with his wife for coastal walks. “Cornwall is one of my favourite places, but the drive was always something I dreaded,” Andy explained. A new approach That all changed when Andy heard about a new treatment at Chatteris Osteopaths. Clinic director and principal osteopath Lee Harvey had recently invested in IDD therapy, a non-invasive treatment designed to gently decompress the spine and relieve pressure on the discs. Unlike traditional approaches, IDD therapy uses precise, computer-controlled movements to create space between vertebrae, to help discs rehydrate and heal and reduce irritation of surrounding nerves. “IDD therapy is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for chronic back, neck and leg pain. the risks, such as post-operative infections and bleeding,” explains Lee. After an updated MRI confirmed that his lower discs were still compressed, Andy committed to a course of 20 IDD sessions at Chatteris Osteopaths. The treatment journey “At first, I wasn’t sure whether it was doing anything,” Andy admitted. “I had been feeling those nagging, burning sensations for so long that I couldn’t imagine life without them.” But gradually, he started to notice changes. Car journeys became less uncomfortable. Long office days left him less fatigued. And when discomfort did flare up, his recovery was quicker. By the end of the course, Andy felt a genuine difference: • Travelling became easier – sitting for longer periods was more manageable. • Work days improved – less tiring, with more energy to spare. • Flare-ups faded faster – discomfort no longer lingered for days. Most importantly, Cornwall was now back on the cards. Andy and his wife

could once again enjoy long coastal walks without fear of the long journey. “This treatment has been a very good investment of both my time and money. If IDD therapy had been available 25 years ago, my life would have been far more comfortable.” Andy’s story shows that long-term back pain doesn’t have to mean long-term limitations. If you’ve been struggling and feel like you’ve run out of options, it might be worth exploring whether IDD therapy could help you too.
