DOWN TO THE WIRELESS At high-stakes corporate events, reliable kit is key

Purina Mills in Puerto Rico. The Bolt 4K 750 was pushed even further, with a shoot that required a constantly moving camera – from a ballroom, to an outdoor patio, to the beach and back. “It would have been too arduous to run cable all through the sand, so I kept our camera operator on wireless the whole time. And there wasn’t one single bit of dropout.” TAKING OUT THE GUESSWORK The shoot that particularly impressed Shubert, with the Teradek system’s robust connectivity, occurred across three locations in Dublin. For him, preparation is key to getting these right. “I do maybe 85% of my work before we even open up the truck doors at the venue. If I haven’t been there before, I always require advanced meetings. We take the gear out into to the environment, in the same window or time period as the event will take place. You don’t leave that up to guesswork.” Inside Dublin’s historic Mansion House, the shoot included a mobile camera moving through a crowd, with video control 200ft away in the balcony of the steel-reinforced building. With interference threatened by a crowd of people on their phones, a nearby TV broadcaster, radio mics and a downtown location, the Teradek still performed flawlessly. “I’ve owned three or four different wireless systems, but with this one I’ve been blown away,

going to all these different environments and never having dropout.” Michael Shubert Productions is starting to employ stabilisation systems like the AntiGravityCam from Cinema Devices, which allows extreme flexibility, letting a camera operator go almost anywhere at nearly any speed. This opportunity can only be realised with equally powerful connectivity. It doesn’t matter if an operator can follow a subject to the very top of a building, if you can’t get the signal back. “We’ve finally taken the plunge on getting this new stabilisation system, because the wireless worked so damn well.”
