CANON EOS 5D MARK III The generation-old Canon EOS 5D Mark III makes a lot of sense, especially considering it costs around £700/ $700. Compared to the Mark II version, which was the camera that changed the landscape for filmmakers due to its full-frame HD capture, the Mark III packed a new sensor with two stops more sensitivity. It has less moiré and time code support for multi-cam set-ups. There is a headphone jack that was missing from the Mark II. And there are lots of well looked-after versions from amateur photographers on the market. Of course, as with all DSLRs, you still need some sort of loupe or viewer and perhaps a rig, audio is problematic and you need some ND filters. But it’s an awesome buy.

CANON 70-200MM F/2.8L

IS II USM LENS

If there is one lens that has been the mainstay of many filmmakers’ careers, it’s a fast f/2.8 Canon 70-200mm zoom. Although the latest Mark III version has better coating and is actually a slightly different colour, the Mark II has the same design, optical quality, AF and just about everything else. The Mark II lens can be had from around £700/$750, compared to two grand for a newMark III version. There are lots of these lenses around, so there is often plenty of choice. But many have been used by professional photographers, so may have had a hard life. Look for a lightly used one and it’ll give you service for years.

CANON C300

The Canon EOS C300 boasts 50Mbps 4:2:2 internal codec and doesn’t need an external recorder, hence its popularitywith run-and-gun filmers. It also comes in a PLmount as well as Canon’s EFmount and records to cheap CF cards. The sensor is the same as the C100, but the codec makes its output far cleaner. It does shoot 60fps, but only in 720p. And, of course, like the C100, there is no 4K. The C300 was around £12,000/$13,000 when it hit the market, but a used one can be snapped up for around £2000/$2400.
