BIRD SPECIAL / 29
Get creative with your shots
GO BIG WITH BOKEH Use a large aperture like f/2.8 to introduce bokeh into your frame as added interest
BIRD BEHAVIOUR Focus on capturing a bird’s natural behaviour in the wild, such as feeding or even fighting a rival
FILL THE FRAME Zoom in as much as you can and show the textures of their features. Fill the frame with your subject
STUNNING SILHOUETTES Make the most of backlight and your subjects’ form by capturing a silhouette at sunset
a budget-friendly way of extending your optic’s reach, but they do come with a compromise, which is reduced light passing through to the sensor. This trade-off means that a 1.4x teleconverter will cost you one full stop of light, turning an f/4 lens into an f/5.6. This trade-off worsens when using a 2x teleconverter, as this will cost you two full stops, pushing that f/4 lens to f/8. To maintain fast shutter speeds at f/8, you may need to increase your ISO, but modern cameras are now a lot better at handling digital noise.
GO WIDE Bird photography isn’t just about long lenses, so switch up your focal lengths and try going for an ultra wide-angle composition instead
