GEAR. ANAMORPHIC LENSES
Zeiss/Arri A collaboration between two of cinema’s biggest brands has produced the Master Anamorphic range, which includes nine high-performance prime lenses, ranging from 28mm to 180mm. These robust optics can be paired with Arri’s 1.4x and 2.0x Alura LDS extenders, to push the focal length to 360mm. Each lens features 15 aperture blades, minimal image breathing and blue streak lines for artistic flares and reflections. The lens range also supports accessories for more creative
filming, including the brand’s Flare Sets, consisting of easily replaceable front and rear glass elements with a special lens coating that encourages flaring, ghosting and veiling glare. Arri says the flare elements can be used individually or in combination, to provide three additional looks for extra on-set creativity. For something a little more unique, the Arri’s Anamorphic Ultra Wide Zoom 19-36mm T4.2 provides an even wider solution, without sacrificing image quality.
Vazen Vazen produces anamorphic lenses for mounts including PL, EF, Micro Four Thirds and RF. The latter is available singly or as a three-lens set, comprising 28mm T2.2 1.8x, 40mm T2 1.8x and 65mm T2 1.8X. The company also announced the 135mm T2.8 1.8X, which joins the full-frame EF/PL line-up, to create a three-lens set – 50mm, 85mm and 135mm. Vazen says: “All 1.8X anamorphic lenses feature a front anamorphic design. It delivers a buttery smooth oval bokeh, signature blue, but not over-saturated, horizontal flare.” The 1.8x squeeze is designed to balance the anamorphic characteristics and resolution.
Cintek
All the lenses feature a 77mm filter thread, so accessories can be quickly switched. Caldwell Chameleon anamorphics, meanwhile, are also available in PL mount and come in a range focal lengths, from 48mm to 150mm. The line comprises six optics, with all bar the 150mm having a T3.0 maximum aperture. The Chameleons provide a 1.79x squeeze factor, delivering a balance between the anamorphic look and use of imaging area.
Distributor Cintek offers a brace of anamorphic options from P+S Technik and Caldwell Chameleon. The P+S range comprises four optics – 40mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm – with the lenses sold singly. These sit within the Evolution 2X line-up and are based on the original optical designs of the vintage Kowa anamorphics. Available in PL mount, the lenses feature a mix of max apertures – from T2.4 in the 50mm lens, through to T3.2 on the 100mm.
Schneider-Kreuznach With roots stretching back to 1913, the Schneider Group produces a vast and varied range of optics for commercial needs. Underlining that is the Isco4all series, combining three spherical cine primes with an anamorphic front adapter. The three spherical lenses are mini cine primes made to Schneider-Kreuznach’s spec by DuLens and offering full-frame coverage in each focal length – 43mm, 58mm and 85mm. Consistent in size, weight and scale position, the lenses have a vintage amber coating and a user-changeable EF mount. Adding to the anamorphic option is the Iscorama 54 CU-1.5X adapter. If the name is familiar, you’re clearly an anamorphic geek – it’s a modern upgrade of the Iscorama 54, a film classic.
