GET FLASHING Around the size of a fast 70-200mm zoom lens, the Elinchrom is very portable – it’s simple to use, too

REMEMBER WHEN USING location flash was difficult? The Elinchrom ONE makes that seem a very distant memory. Gone are days of heavy heads, temperamental controls and sync cords waiting to trip you up, because – whether bought as a standalone flash, or in kit form – the Elinchrom ONE aces all departments. So, it’s no surprise that it topped the PN Awards poll for best portable flash, as voted for by you. Reviewed back in PN 92 to high marks – and having been a firm favourite with the Photography News team ever since – the Elinchrom ONE makes location lighting a real pleasure. A huge part of this is portability. The head, with its integral battery pack, weighs only 1.5kg, and at 23mm long is as easy to carry as a telephoto lens. The streamlined build is aided by the fact that you can remove the tilt head component, so you can easily put a couple in the top of a backpack. It’s the same story in terms of handling. A control dial and menu button give simple access to all modes and settings – if you prefer, use the touchscreen. For instance, swiping up or down to control the flash power or bi-colour LED modelling light. Add in flawless triggering via the built-in Elinchrom Skyport receiver, and you can trigger in manual, TTL or HSS at up to 200m away. Elinchrom and

Profoto modifiers fit securely to the head, too. That’s all for nothing if the light quality isn’t up to scratch – but the Elinchrom ONE doesn’t disappoint. Its lithium-ion battery gives a maximum 131Ws output, controllable down to 7Ws in 0.1 step increments, which is very useful for wide-aperture work. Colour from the flash is great, too, with only a +/-150K variation across the range. Recycle times are a brisk 0.9sec at full power and you’ll get up to 725 full-power flashes off a single charge. Switch into Action mode and flash durations drop to an impressive 1/7000sec. If your subject needs continuous light, the Elinchrom ONE’s bi-colour LED does a great job. Controlled independently or proportionally with the flash, it has a top output of 3000 lux, and its temperature can be set between 2700K and 6500K. It all adds up to what you really want from a lighting system – something that expands creative options and offers reliable, high- quality light, without ever feeling like a burden to your process.
