DA VINCI RESOLVE TEST

Deliver tab The final tab is where you render out your entire project. Unlike Premiere where you have to open a separatemedia encoder, Resolve allows you to render inside the application itself. Upper left of the screen are all the render settings, the program monitor to the right, the Clips panel below and the timeline along the bottom. DaVinci o‹ers a whole load of presets for social media sites like YouTube and Vimeo, so if you knowwhat platformyou’re delivering to, you can use one of themas your starting point. In the render settings you can set the file name, access audio settings and either render as a single clip or individual clips. Once all these settings have been sorted, click Add to render queue and it’ll move it to the Render Queue tab in the top right corner. If you have several timelines or edits on the go, you can render themall in one hit - like AdobeMedia Encoder or Compressor. Once everything’s in, click Start render. This is the only way to export your actual movie out of DaVinci.

ABOVE Rendering is done within Resolve, and it offers plenty of presets for platforms like Vimeo and YouTube.

THE VERDICT It may seem intimidating, but DaVinci Resolve has achieved a fine balance between what Premiere and Final Cut aremissing while also including what they do best. With a faster andmore responsive system thanks to a CPU and GPU optimisation, it’s compatible cross-platform, doesn’t require Internet access, has the ultimate industry grading software and pays waymore attention to detail thanmost editing programmes. For those used to other programs it’s completely comprehensible. Resolve 15 really does provide an organised workflow that o‹ers at least four industry-standard apps in one, with a completely customisable interface. It speeds up processes, enhances editing options and simplifies workflows. And it does it well. But best of all, it’s free.

On the far left are the stacked tracks, while the timeline takes up the rest of the screen real estate. TheMixer, Meters, Inspector andMetadata tabs are top right, with theMedia Pool, E‹ects Library and Index panel top left. It’s important to know the video output can be found in the Meters section, as most people spend ages trying to find this. Within theMixer tab, double-click the EQ toggle to access to a built-in equaliser for your selected track, so there’s no need for an external plug-in likemost apps. If you then double-click on the Dynamics panel in theMixer tab, a pop-up will appear where you can change the dynamics of your audio, with a whole range of faders and dials such as an Expander and Gate. To split andmove clips around use ctrl+/, but if you use ctrl+C andmove the playhead, it allows you tomove the audio clip and previewwhat it would sound like, which can be very useful if you’re trying to line up specific beats. Use your keyboard arrows tomove between clips or move clips around as it creates amuch faster pace. Another useful tool, similar to that in Premier and Final Cut, means you can colour code between all clips, both audio and video. To get this right-click and choose Colour tab.
