Master glass formirrorless Samyang’s AF 75mm f/1.8 FE combines innovation with quality,
making it a lens built for the modern age M odern lenses need to match the quality of the advanced cameras they’re mounted on. They must be smaller and faster, providing better images than what’s gone before. Thankfully, that’s all true of the brilliant Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE, an optic that can really inspire Sony Alpha users to make better movies. A lot of things need to come together to make a great short telephoto lens – the first is focal length. This, in combination with the way it renders the subject, defines a lens that’s ideal for portraits. At 75mm, it creates a natural, undistorted view. While the limited shooting distance needed to make portraits with full, half-length or head-and-shoulder framing allows easy communication and a natural connection to the subject. The 75mm focal length has other benefits, too, as it has a unique character. And remember, mount this lens on an APS-C Sony Alpha body, like the A6500, and you’ll get an impressive 112mm equivalent. This is something you can simulate by using the APS-C crop mode on full-frame bodies like the A7R IV. Creating a shallow depth-of-field can also be highly important. Shooting at – or near to – the AF 75mm f/1.8 FE’s maximum aperture brings delicious subject separation. This lets you compose in cluttered or distracting locations, or get in close, so only the subject’s eyes are in focus. Adding to its natural feel, the lens also produces very smooth blur and large, round highlights in low-light situations.

“Shooting at –or near to– the lens’ maximum aperture brings delicious subject separation” Add to that the great optical quality – with ten elements in nine groups. These include extra-low dispersion (ED) and high-refractive (HR) lenses, and produce excellent edge-to-edge sharpness, while effortlessly controlling chromatic aberrations. UMC (Ultra Multi-Coating) is applied in order to minimise internal reflections, making for increased clarity and contrast. The AF 75mm f/1.8 FE uses a new stepping motor to give quick, quiet and accurate focusing, so you can work with the subject without distraction. And, of course, it functions seamlessly with Sony’s revolutionary eye detection AF. Handling-wise, the AF 75mm f/1.8 FE also pairs beautifully with Sony’s mirrorless bodies. It’s light, at only 230g, and measures just 65x69mm– feeling balanced on camera, and taking up very little space in your bag. What’s more, the lens has a neat custom switch, which lets you set the ring to either manual focus or aperture control mode – and further options will soon be available through firmware updates. The AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is very much a lens for the mirrorless age, so head to the website to find out more.
