The pro choice Why the ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 is the lens
most independent filmmakers covet
W hen it comes to choosing a premium-quality prime lens, professionals go for ZEISS. The Compact Prime CP.3 line is again the number one choice in the annual Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards, voted for by independent filmmakers around the world. This time, the versatile 35mmT2.1 has been voted best prime lens, joining its 50mm sibling as winner of these prestigious accolades. The reason is clear – this affordable, yet robust range offers the optical performance ZEISS is renowned for, but in a package ideal for new-generation filmmakers, who often prefer smaller cameras. CP.3s are equally at home onmirrorless and DSLRs, as well as cinema cameras, where the compact form factor can be a
huge benefit. And they are perfect for use on drones or gimbals. The CP.3 range is hugely versatile and produces footage that is clean and crisp, with high contrast, rich blacks and saturated colours. This is due to an optical design that eliminates veiling glare and flares, thanks to advanced coatings, painted lens rims and light traps within the barrel. That means it’s perfect for HDR capture, too. It’s a thoroughly modern design that creates incredible-looking movies and speeds up workflow at all stages – from capture to post-production. ZEISS was the first major optical company to recognise the shift towards smaller cameras with high-resolution, full-frame sensors – fuelled by the popularity of DSLR shooters more
than a decade ago. The filmmaking world was stunned with the quality and formof the original Compact Prime CP.2 lenses, launched to help independent creators who demanded no-compromise products. The newer CP.3 optics actually go one step further, with a far smaller and lighter body, improvedmechanics and lens coatings. One of the biggest benefits handed down to this generation is the interchangeable mount, allowing lens mounts to be swapped for a different camera fit. These are available in PL, Canon EF, Nikon F, Micro Four Thirds and Sony E fitment.
