MANFROTTO MOVE QR SYSTEM £92/$100 manfrotto.com
When it’s time to take a tripod head off its legs to fit a slider between them, it can be a right pain. There’s locking screws to navigate, the hassle of slowly unscrewing head from base – then attaching the slider to the legs like some wobbly helicopter blade. This is followed by twisting the head back on top of the slider. Remember to get the hex keys out and tighten the set screws to stop it coming off. This is a relatively easy job, but can be painstaking – especially if it’s several times per shoot. It’s the same hassle if you want to fix your gimbal to a boom, for example; or some sort of skater, dolly or jib arm. That’s why Manfrotto came up with the Move system. Essentially a solid and speedy quick-release for heavier kit, like tripods and heads.
MOVE IT! The aluminium catcher screws to the tripod base, and the QR plate to the head. It clicks in place (above), but does add height (right)
“If you have a set on your tripod, head and slider, assembly and disassembly takes hardly any time–encouraging you tomake changes”
The base unit has a 3/8in-16 female socket that fits to the tripod plate or top of your slider, for example. There’s an anti-rotation set screw to lock this ‘catcher’ plate down firmly. Then you attach the smaller, lighter QR plate to the base of your tripod head or gimbal. This comes with a 1/4in-20 male screw, but a larger 3/8in-16 male adapter is included. To quickly fasten the head to the tripod, you drop the head with QR plate right into the catcher on the tripod. It is spring-loaded and clicks in place firmly. For extra safety, you should give the open-close ring a quick tighten, to avoid it accidentally being knocked open. To separate the units, turn the open-close ring anticlockwise, as marked; and the plate is loosened for removal. It only takes seconds to do. So, if you have a set on your tripod, head and slider, assembly and disassembly takes hardly any time at all – encouraging you to actually
make changes. Everything comes together so much faster, allowing you to focus on getting the shot. And as the Manfrotto Move system uses standard-size threads, it works on any tripod, head or other accessory from any brand. The negative is that each Move system adds around 30mm/1.18in of height between the top of the tripod and the head, which may be important to you in some cases. And, of course, you need to fix a few of the £92/$100 kits to all your most-used bits of equipment and tripods to make it work at its best. You can buy the parts separately, with the QR plates costing £23/$25 and catcher £83/$90, although it is much better value to buy the entire kit.
